The Browser…
For my first post, I want to encourage the use of a good Web browser. Looking at these Browser statistics, it seems like people are finally understanding that there are other options out there besides Internet Explorer. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, then this post is probably geared towards you.
Let me use a simple analogy to explain Web browsers. Let’s use cars. Web Browsers are our cars and Web sites are the places we are driving to. There are many cars you can drive, but there are obviously advantages and disadvantages to each. If you could choose a luxury, fuel-efficient car over a gas-guzzling hooptie, I bet you’d choose the luxury car though.
In terms of Web Browsers, Firefox is probably the most celebrated browser right now. It’s like a BMW, Lexus, or a fuel-efficient Honda. Unfortunately, you are probably driving a 1995 Ford Explorer. While your Explorer was once the most popular vehicle on the road, you are starting to look a little "behind the times". This is the case with people using Internet Explorer, particular Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). It’s ironic that they have the same name.
About 20% of people are still using IE6. IE6 is a wreck; it’s unsafe, slow, and doesn’t read code properly. It’s a Web developer’s worst enemy. If you are using IE6 right now, you are probably seeing update notices on my site. You are also probably not seeing things properly.
You could update to Internet Explorer 7 (or now IE8), which is definitely better, but it’s still like driving an SUV. SUVs might be your thing though.
BUT – If you want safety, speed, and better handling, jump behind the wheel of Firefox. It’s completely free and has a full tank of gas.
Prove to your kids that you are still hip and show them that foxy icon on your desktop.
You can also check out these other safe and free Web browsers:
Opera
Safari (Apple)
Chrome (Google)
NOTE: I’m not in any way affiliated with Firefox… I just love their product.
